Dear Resident,
Holdfast Bay is important to me as it is to you and I am writing to seek your support to elect me as your Mayor for the next four years.
A Councillor since 1995 and serving Somerton Ward since amalgamation has given me an insight into the issues faced by residents in both the previous Glenelg and Brighton Councils and my community knows I have worked diligently to help achieve the best possible outcomes for residents and ratepayers.
During my time on Council I’ve been involved in many successful projects including:
- Bay Discovery at Glenelg Town Hall, both the creation and successful operation;
- Regeneration of the Kingston Park cliff face, Gilbertson and Barton Gullies;
- The establishment of Coast Park;
- Seaforth Park as a quality open space;
- Restoration of Partridge House;
- Moseley Square upgrade;

as well as supporting the rebuilding of our Surf Lifesaving Clubs.
With the completion of Holdfast Shores it is time to move on, to enjoy the lack of construction and take pleasure in the open vistas, plazas and green space, entertainment centre and retail precincts which form part of the final outcome.
I believe I have the necessary experience and skills to lead the Holdfast Bay Council effectively and successfully. I have learnt that a successful Mayor must acknowledge all elected members as equals, be supportive of Council decisions as spokesperson regardless of personal opinion, encourage and negotiate with Council to work as a team, and most importantly recognize your own limitations.
Important issues like sound strategic planning to ensure Council’s sustainability, prosperous business and retail areas, protection of the environment, tourism, retention of local character and quality open space, safety, traffic management and parking will continue to face Council and I can provide expertise in those areas.
A leader must have the courage to make the hard decisions and the ability to inspire all members of Council to look at the big picture rather than be swayed by a vocal minority which sometimes opposes any change. A successful Council relies on equality, flexibility & negotiation.

The good name and image of Holdfast Bay Council has taken a hammering and my agenda is to restore that by leading a cohesive group of elected members, encouraging sound decisions regarding governance, finance, the environment, community welfare, safety and development.
I make no promises that I will deliver a particular outcome on an issue, as one person cannot deliver. Council is a democracy and decisions are made by the majority whose decisions I will respect.
I look forward to your support and welcome your personal contact by phone, email or via my website.
Yours sincerely
Cheryl Lush
